Armed with vouchers from the Times a trip to this Spanish/Mexican restaurant was organised for me and my girl friend Judith. It proved to be well worth the short drive from York. Good food, nice atmosphere and excellent service.
Looking through the booklet provided by the Times which accompanied the dine for £10 vouchers the name of this restaurant caught my eye. Listed as being in York I was surprised not to have heard of this place. As it turned out the location was in fact Hustwaite. Google maps instructed me the drive would take 49 minutes, but I was reliably informed by my girl friend it should take no more that 25.
So a table was booked for 8.30. It wasn’t until I was about to leave that I read the small print which stated my vouchers couldn’t be used on a Saturday. There goes my grand plan out the window! We decided to go try this plane anyway.
The drive to Hustwaite from York was short, basically straight up the A19 for a short while. The country lanes lading towards the village are un-light and reminded me of being on holiday in Devon, proper country side business.
First impressions where good. The restaurant is easily recognisable as on old refurbished village inn. The glowing lights and warm colours beacon you in from the dark street. A very warm welcome greeted us at the bar, which you come to upon entrance. Drinks where offered and we where advised our table is ready. The interior continues the warm welcoming impressions the externals initially provided. Dark reds along with very chunky solid wood furniture suit the theme and help to generate a relaxed atmosphere. The place seemed popular, despite its remoter location. This is normally a good sign and was reassuring.
Service continued in high standard we first experienced. The menu was compressive with some good specials. Judith and I both chose from the specials. The specials menu is was it is all about, as you are more likely to get seasonal flavours and fresh produce.
To start with we both chose a Tapas dish each. The Tapas menu serves as a starters menu in the Roasted Pepper, a nice way to do things. If the two dishes we chose are to go by the rest of the Tapas should be excellent. Mains did not disappoint either. The pork I ordered was succulent and flavoursome. The pancetta (a type of ham, like Parma) slightly crispy with a gorgeous stuffing in the centre. The Gratin was quite as good, but the pork easily made up for this. I tried so hard to fit the last piece of pork in my mouth, but I was beat. If anything the mains was slight busy with flavours, but very nice. Drinks where good. Sam Miguel on tap was a nice touch, and Jude enjoyed the wine.
When leaving it seemed a few people where relaxing at the bar, so this place must still serve as a watering whole for the locals. Hopefully they don’t bite!
